Impact

Hagir Elsheikh was born in Sudan, halfway around the world from Central PA. Activism in Sudan brought with it danger and death threats from the Sudanese government. Elsheikh became a political refugee, later traveling to the U.S. Arriving in the U.S. as an immigrant, Elsheikh had to learn how to navigate a new language, a new culture, and the struggles of surviving domestic abuse. The odds were not in her favor. Elsheikh became a single mother working long shifts and taking night classes. The HACC community was like a second family to Elsheikh. She states, “I know I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for the incredibly supportive staff and students I met during my time at HACC. I have been through my fair share of failures and successes but at the end of the day, I know that I have built up the strength to fight and keep going. Circumstances will exist and obstacles will appear in your way, but it is up to you to use them to your advantage and not allow them to destroy you.”
